Exotic Herbs Discussed – Cinnamon, Cumin, Curry Powder and Five Spice

We will now discuss slightly more complicated herbs. These add that je ne sais quoi touch to the food and give it some kick.

Cinnamon is very flavourful and a good 0 calorie powder that can be used as a spice on anything. It can turn the most boring oatmeal into a delicious bowl of breakfast. It originates from the islands, where they grind the bark of a tropical tree to get this yummy spice. It works well with other intense spices and offers an interesting variation.

Cumin is a must have for any Middle Eastern cooking you plan to do. It is also heavily used in the southern United States. It is used to make chilli powder and goes great with anything grilled. You can either use it to marinate food, or you can pat it in the meat directly.

Curry Powder has a strong blend of spices which typically has more than 10 various herbs. These can be cardamom, mace, nutmeg, turmeric, oregano, ground sesame seeds, etc. If you are aiming for an Indian or perhaps Middle Eastern dish, you need to throw some curry powder in the dishes. It is often used as the primary seasoning in chicken in many Indian dishes.

Another exotic powder mix is called five spices. This one originated in Vietnam and mainland China. It has cinnamon, cloves, fennel, ginger and peppercorn. This also has an exotic, south-Asian taste and fragrance to it. Works great for certain Indian dishes, especially those from the northern regions of the country.
