The search for exotic food
With an increase in people holidaying further afield and in more adventurous locations more and more people are looking to recreate the recipes and tastes that they have experienced on their travels. With this in mind retailers are looking to stock more exotic and speciality foods to cater for the demand from consumers.
From Arborio rice to exotic spices and blends such as dukkah and harissa and fragrant additions such as lemongrass, ginger and kaffir lime leaves there has never been a better opportunity for retailers to tap into this new found desire for people to cook something a little out of the ordinary.
It is quite easy for retailers to stock items to meet this demand with many of the different spices and pastes being available in ambient format meaning the risk of wastage is lower and the jarred products being as good as their fresh counterparts. This also gives retailers the chance to sell other products alongside such as rices and other accompaniments which increases the spend of consumers.
This also means that retailers can create ‘meal kits’ where all the shopper needs to do is add in the meat, vegetables or fish to create themselves a delicious and authentic meal in the comfort of their own home.
This is an area which will continue to grow in coming years as we get more and more adventurous with what we eat and is a trend that retailers would do well to keep up with as the opportunity of multiple sales is huge.
